Gold has three distinct personalities — one for each major session. The strategy that prints money during the London/New York overlap will bleed your account during Asian hours. Understanding when to trade is the foundation of everything else.

The 24-Hour Gold Cycle (All Times GMT/UTC)
Asian Session (22:00–07:00 GMT): The Accumulation Zone
🌙 Asian Session — Low Volatility, Range-Bound
Average range: 50–120 pips | Volume: ~15% of daily total
Asian hours are NOT for trend trading. Gold moves in tight ranges, building the structure that London will either respect or break. The trap: a 30-pip move in Asia feels like a breakout to an impatient trader. It's noise.
What to do:
- Mark the Asian range high/low — these become London's first targets
- Identify the H4 trend structure (is Asia building HH/HL or LH/LL?)
- Do NOT enter trades. The win rate on Asian-only signals is below 35%
- Prepare levels for London open — this is planning time, not trading time
Exception: Sydney open (22:00 GMT) can produce a small directional move that sets Asia's tone. Worth noting, not trading.
London Session (07:00–15:00 GMT): The Trend Initiator

Average range: 150–350 pips | Volume: ~40% of daily total
London is where gold trends are born. The first 90 minutes (07:00–08:30 GMT) are the most reliable for directional moves. London typically breaks the Asian range — 70% of trading days see a clean break within 2 hours of London open.
Key patterns:
- London Breakout (07:00–08:00): Price breaks Asian range high/low. If it holds the break for 15+ minutes, the move is likely to continue 50-100+ pips
- London Reversal (09:00–10:00): Fake breakout of Asian range, reverses. Traded opposite direction with high probability
- London Lunch (11:00–12:30): Volume drops 30-50%. Avoid entries. Many gold traders give back morning profits during lunch chop

- Price respects technical levels more cleanly when liquidity is deep

New York Session (15:00–20:00 GMT): The Wild Card
🗽 NY Afternoon — High Volatility, Lower Predictability
Average range: 200–450 pips | Volume: ~30% of daily total
After London closes (15:00 GMT), gold can do anything. NY-only hours are characterized by:
- Sharp reversals: NY afternoon often reverses the London trend
- News-driven spikes: US economic data drops at 12:30–14:00 GMT, moving gold aggressively
- Late-day squeezes (18:00–19:30): As NY traders close positions, gold can spike 50-100 pips in minutes
Strategy: Fade extremes. If gold has rallied 300+ pips by 16:00 GMT, selling into exhaustion has a 65%+ probability of a 50+ pip retrace. If it's plunged, buying the dip pays.

For the Full-Time Trader
Session-block your day:
- 06:30–07:00: Pre-London analysis. Review Asian range, mark levels, check calendar
- 07:00–10:00: London session trading. Focus on breakout entries
- 10:00–12:00: Light trading or monitoring. London lunch approaching — tighten stops
- 12:00–15:00: PRIME WINDOW. Full attention. Best setups of the day
- 15:00–17:00: NY afternoon. Fade extremes, take partials, don't overstay
- 17:00+: Done. Review, journal, prepare for tomorrow
Session-Based Gate Adjustments

- Overlap: Standard scores. All gates apply equally
- London: Heavier weight on H1 Structure (Gate 2) — London respects structure more cleanly than NY

Common Session Mistakes
- Trading Asian hours like London hours. The 30-pip "breakout" at 01:00 GMT is noise. Wait for real volume.
- Holding through London lunch. Volume evaporates between 11:00–12:00 GMT. Tighten stops or exit.
- Ignoring the economic calendar during NY. 12:30–14:00 GMT brings US data. Know what's coming.
- Trading after NY close. After 20:00 GMT, liquidity is thin and spreads widen. There is no edge here.
- Not adjusting strategy per session. The same strategy that works in the overlap will fail in Asian hours. Adapt or bleed.
