Gold isn't equally active all day. Unlike EURUSD which has reasonable activity across all sessions, gold's volume and volatility are heavily concentrated in specific windows. Trading outside those windows means thin liquidity, wider spreads, and lower-quality setups.
The difference between trading gold at 10 AM ET vs 10 PM ET is night and day — literally.
| Session | Time (ET) | Time (GMT) | Volatility | Quality |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Asian (Tokyo/Sydney) | 7 PM – 4 AM | 23:00 – 08:00 | Low | ⭐ |
| London | 3 AM – 12 PM | 07:00 – 16:00 | High | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
| New York | 8 AM – 5 PM | 12:00 – 21:00 | High | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
| London-NY Overlap 🏆 | 8 AM – 12 PM | 12:00 – 16:00 | MAX | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
During Asian hours, gold typically consolidates in tight ranges (10-20 points). There are few directional moves, spreads widen, and breakouts are often false. This session is dominated by Tokyo and Sydney traders, who don't drive significant gold volume.
What to do: Use this time to mark key levels, update your analysis, and prepare for London. If you must trade, use H4/Daily charts only — no scalping.
London is where gold wakes up. The first 2 hours (3-5 AM ET) often produce the cleanest directional move of the day as European institutions enter the market. Gold frequently breaks out of the Asian range during this window.
Best strategies: Volatility breakout at the open, trend following once direction is established. The H1 and M15 charts give the cleanest signals. Our breakout and trend-following strategies perform best during London.
New York brings a second wave of volume, especially around US economic releases (8:30 AM ET is the most common release time). Gold's reaction to CPI, NFP, and FOMC during NY hours can exceed 50 points.
Afternoon fade (1-5 PM ET): After the morning rush, volume drops. Gold often reverses part of the day's move, creating mean-reversion opportunities. Trade smaller size in the afternoon.

Pro move: At 8 AM ET, review what London did from 3-8 AM. If gold has trended, trade NY continuation. If gold has consolidated, trade the NY breakout. The overlap tells you which regime you're in.
Sessions are the rhythm — but news events are the earthquake. These releases can move gold 30-80 points regardless of session:
